Dakshineshwar Temple

February26

Never before entering this place had I thought that the kali Maa could be bewitchingly beautiful and would create an instant aura of faith and surrender. After Guruji departed Kolkatta, I wanted to fill the void with this temple visit where Sri RamKrishna Paramhans had broken all the traditions of bhakti from the intellect to igniting it in the heart. He was a non-conformist who constructed sensitivity in love, unfathomable faith, senseless simplicity and the great Vivekanada.

The story goes that Ramakrishna through His bhakti swam through the ocean of karmas, but something still had not completely blossomed in His Being. And the reason was that He didn’t have a Guru. When the aroma of fullness was spreading the Guru came to Him and one touch of His Guru, enlightened Him. The knowledge was given under a Kalpvruksh which stands tall being the epitome of that silence. He continued as a priest in the temple utterly immersed in the love of the Devi.

The Devi quietly asserts Her presence in this place and the incense of bhakti pleasantly tantalizes the temple.

Mahaan-Bharat

November11

India - what makes it so seemingly special around the world, everywhere? Its people, its spirituality. Today the world is  made up of two dimensions on the material plane, people and money. If you had to rule America you would be controlling a quarter of the world economics. What makes India so unique here is to rule India you would be ruling a sixth of the minds of the people and their lifestyles. A Billion people and more! So who rules India, draws the demographics of change to be or not-to-be.

The ‘Madame’ family has ruled the country for almost 40 ludicrous long years. The concentration of citizens into few cities, the poverty of the poor and the abysmal performance of the country in International radar have immodestly increased. To carve a prosperous path for one billion people, to roll out new solid businesses, to reinforce research, to get the country closer with distances in hearts and travel, have never been initiated. The fear of an internal attack, the security at the borders, the protection of our own people in SriLanka, Australia have never taken center-stage at Janpath where it should have mattered most. Why is it that the people of this enormous nation are easy, docile targets for the world-over in terms of internal disharmony(Australia) or terrorism? Indian people who are remarkably peaceful have died thousands of times by bombs, bombers and brutality. Does “Madame” care?  Does she feel?

How is it that the common man is lamenting, limping to make an existence, while the monarchial party has ruled us for 40 long years. The saas-bahu which was resented by most of us block-busted the small screens for six years. The directors here knew what makes India come back to them time-and-again and how? The patterns in the formula of politics are well understood and applied time and again to roll out regular victories. The sharp strategy in ruling India has worked by deeply understanding the internals of Indian Politics and the insides of the human mind. The pitching of the people is perfect for a winning combination. As the party has got stronger, will India get stronger? The answer is obvious and you and i don’t want to believe it though. This is what gets the same party to power all-the-time. A hope in the future, sometime, somewhere, somehow! For forty long years, yet things have been alarmingly the same for the kissan, jawan, vigyaan in the country. Roti, kapda, makaan are our main issues till date and this is what makes a victorious formula. To keep the mind yearning for basic needs and showing them light which fades away in the horizon.

With the recession setting itself, India needs to rise and demand deliverables which are measurable and proliferate development for the country, more than the personal pockets or the party.  Inducing intelligence with innocence, injecting it with a dosage of robustness with resilience, self-reliance with security, spirituality with skillfulness, idealism with practicality, dynamism with devotion. The schizophrenic existence of all of us wanting change but never reaching out to the ballot and loathing about the politicians post-victory needs a think button on the mind of India. Get to know who rules you, ask for his perfomance, let people around in muhallas, flats know about him/her and this should be part of the monthly meetings. Be flexible to change, judge the performance with Arjun’s focussed eye for growth, Yudhistar’s resolve to righteousness, Bhims’ strength to protect and Nakul and Sachdev’s beauty to enhance and protect the earth. And Krishna’s grace and vision to farsightedness. This will be the Mahaan-Bharat then!

My Country @ 62

August15

This is the time to focus on what India has achieved, acquired, innovated, shared in the past 62 years. Who is India? It is you and me. Instead of being part of the problem I decide to be part of the solution, the greatness my country has and radiates to every corner of the world.

Here are some and you can add more…

1) We taught the world that to dispel darkness you don’t need to fight but light, light a glow of Ahimsa, and this can be in the form of Vinobha Bhave and Mahatma Gandhi and millions more who stood the gaucheries of the British to liberate us and give us this much valued Freedom. I Bow down to each and every one of them in honor and silence. Thank you.

2) We solved the world’s problems of the millennium with our able and qualitative IT professionals. We introduced them to every minuscule mohalla in the world. Today behind their systems, smiles an Indian for providing them solutions.

3) Our music, Karnattic or Hindustani, the base of many forms of music plays in some form in every stereo and trumpets in every tympanic membrane.

4) Our fashion with the ancient embroidery and kurtis, the bold and beautiful saari cuts across all boundaries and walks the ramp to and fro, from Mumbai to Manhattan.

5) Our preventive cure for the world through Ayurveda surfaces in every Indian food in the form of turmeric, ginger and is a nebula in the science of medicine. Ayurveda is a boon to the bane world of medicine providing immunity and resilience to the human being.

6) Our gulab jamun’s and daal chawal are salivating in every eatery of the globe. They are healthy, nutritious and fulfilling, every household longs for daal chawal or is on a khichdi diet when one needs to cure the system of unwanted pizza’s and pastries.

&

The world has been gifted by India with His Holiness Sri Sri RaviShankar. A world waits for One who radiates peace and pierces everyone with arrows of love. The world now needs to stand up and acknowledge. Salute Him. How a good scenery adds value to the entire landscape, His presence adds the glory to mankind. His unconditional love to one and all shows, displays, teaches humans it-is-possible. His words produce silence, His silence speaks, His actions teach and His glance is like looking within. I salute this presence and feel ever so grateful to be born in this country which my Guru blesses.

Vande Mataram.

Swine Flu: The Facts and much more…

August12

I received this mail from a student sent to the director here in IIT-roorkie and many more Presidents around the world.

********

I agree with you that swine flu awareness is needed, but there is no need to be panicky and join the publicity propaganda carried out by media and others which acts as a vehicle to spread misconception than to spread scientific information.

These are few facts about swine flu when discussed with the leading epidemiologists.

1) Swine flu, that is H1N1 flu is not new, first detected in 1987
2) Infective stage of flue is 5 days, 1 day before and 4 days after onset of symptoms
3) The best way to prevent it spreading is asking patient having symptoms of flu like fever cough and running nose to take rest at home for 4 days so he does not transmit it
4) Masks are of limited value if any, in this disease, it can spread through droplets on your skin, through contact etc, and I have seen that the masks in Pune are worn as fashion statement, while walking on road today morning I saw people wearing masks coming out for a morning walk with their dogs!, many wearing masks around their necks, and so on, infact these masks shall act as the vehicles to carry the virus, instead, avoiding crowded places or cinema halls or malls where airconditioners are on, is advisable, because you get recirculated air, where the virus density multiplies
5)Death after H1N1 flu is not common, infact infections like measles is taking toll of thousands more every year, and we are oblivious of the facts. Swine flu is being blown out of proportion by media trying to create hysteria among lay people.
6) Fever accompanied by respiratory distress, should be immediately notified which is likely to be a complication of H1N1 flu
7)The mortality is less than .01 percent of those affected, that means may be one in 10,000 affected is likely to suffer the life loss.
8) If you remember, 2 years ago SARS was blown out of proportion, what happened? Humans develop immunity to the virus, the same is going to happen, we develop immunity in due course of time, the virus is in the air, you can not stop it, our body is already developing the immunity so nothing to panic.
We need to take care of children and elderly who have less immunity and do not let them go to crowded places that is all .

WE MUST START THIS CAMPAIGN OF NOT  TO BE AFRAID OF THIS FLU AND LET YOUR DAILY WORK CONTINUE AS NORMAL, NO MASKS FOR ORDINARY CITIZENS, HEALTH CARE WORKERS OR SPECIFIC EXPOSED TO LOT OF CROWDED ENVIRONMENTS MAY BE BENEFITTED, NOT PROVEN.

I am amazed to hear that people are selling masks of RS 20 each which are available to less than Rupee 1 in the market.
See who is getting benefitted?

Please spread the scientific info, do not join the band wagon and stick to science, that should be the order of the day.

Ayurveda can effectively counter Swine Flu: Sri Sri

12th August, 2009
Bengaluru, India
Urging people not to panic, His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living said in a press release, “India has a wealth of knowledge from Ayurveda to counter swine flu”.
Elaborating on this, Dr. Manikantan and Dr. Nisha Manikantan, senior ayurvedic doctors at Sri Sri Ayurveda centre said, “Swine flu invades the body because of a breakdown in immunity. And Ayurveda offers simple & effective remedies to boost immunity & build resistance. Tea made from Laxmi Taru (botanical name: Simarouba) leaves, Tulsi, Amla and Amrut (Giloy) acts as an immunity enhancer. Alternatively & additionally, Ginger and Turmeric (haldi) powder mixed with either lime juice or honey can also be taken twice a day.”
“To counter air-borne swine flu viruses, Sambarani dhoop (loban stems) should be burnt in the house twice a day. Sambarani is a very potent atmospheric sterilser”, the doctors added.
Sri Sri also said, “In addition, our mind also plays an important role in our immunity. Whenever we panic and have fear, our immunity level goes down. Practices like pranayama and meditation play a vital role in reducing panic / fear and keeping ourselves calm. Independent studies conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS) and National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bengaluru (NIMHANS) have empirically proved that practices such as pranayama and meditation boosts immunity at least three-fold. If we can integrate these practices in our daily lives along with the simple Ayurvedic remedies, we can effectively counter swine flu”.

Scrumptious Sartoria

August12

The gloriously exhuberant restaurant which means haute couture in Engish is located in Priya Mall is three-storied and has been my long time favorite in Delhi. The floridly charming interiors wear a fine Italian look and the ambience for long has been a visually and intimately stunning destination for the hungry soul. Every time I visit this boroque styled restaurant it feels lovingly legendary.

The live one-man-band rolls out memorable oldies, digging from long time hits of Queen, George Micheal and Bryan Adams. The third floor corner table centered with a candlelight is enchantingly elegant and my chosen-one.

For the tongue, there is the delicious Italian food served by the well-dressed waiters who help with everything that you don’t understand. They have a small menu to choose from and I sincerely like it, as I have tasted all the vegetarian edible dishes here. I start with an emeraldly green drink named ‘Lost in the Forest’, overstated with mint and Indian basil (tulsi), every sip of which finds you hungrier. We proceeded into the deeply tasty artichoke spinach dip, the visually stunning very very veggie pizza, the medley of vegetables which had the white sauce subtlely shored up with saffron and cinammon and finally the farfalle in arabiatta sauce. The food is an intricate workmanship masterminding a carte du jour with flavour and subtleness. Am whetting your appetite :)

The company was wonderful with Siddharth, Sakshi and Shruti and we re-lived a lot of lost wonderful memories, palate full of Guru stories on a Sunday evening which was a perfect setting for recalling those graceful, loving moments, at Sartoria. One more beautiful day to be grate-full ;)

Breath-trekking experience

August6

Heavy clouds giving cover to the misty earth from the heat of the sun, land profusely picturesque with paints of green in shades rare to root out, gleaming water crawling through the unfrequented, hidden interiors of the land and leaping down from the mountains abducting lots of enthusiasm, zeal and waiting to share it with the world. This was the waterfall we ventured into, in Chhoral, some 20 kms away from Indore.

Early mornings are a dream for the AOL organizing teams and it was a dream-come-true experience. An all male team of Sunil, Prasoon, Suvigya, Ajit, Bhushan, Harshal and Sudhir cramped with faith in bikes and cars turned frolickers.

From the outside one could not assess the adventure which waited in rasp attention for us. The scene unfolded when we walked a mile and merriment took over us. The forests lay naked and were undeterred with our presence and companionship. Surrender its nature, being inclusive its attitude, love its language.

The sound of gushing water is hieroglyphical representation of a sage echoing ‘Om’ in extra solar land. The rains bring to land what a Guru’s presence brings to a devotee. Fulfillment, Growth and Longing for more. The birds confused with abundance, the insects soul searching and nature admiring everything within and without.

Amidst all this we shipped ourselves from this bewitching beauty to a beguiling waterfall, to haul us into whole-hearted, healthy excitement. And what fun it was ! The waterfall is a rise of spirits and a spooky experience. We spent lots of time there which refunded us with freshness and un-describable returns. Concluded with an Om Namah Shivaya chanting on a horizontal surface, to find one amidst this place was a breath-taking experience.

Innocence, Love and Pride re-visited

July20

Banares is The land of Shiva. And in this month of shravan with a solar eclipse on its way, you can see shades of saffron everywhere. Like how there are maternity leaves, these bhaktas called kavadiya’s from all across the country have submitted a Faith leave, traveling barefoot from Allahabad, collecting the sacred waters of the ganges at the holy sangam, offering and prostrating at the feet of the Lord Vishwanath in Banares. They are strong, full of devotion, very colorful and loud. With the chants of Bol-Bhum, Banares was glittering with their presence, the muddy ganges as always in her magical flow and mystical waters were filled with these devout devotees of Lord Shiva echoing love and gratitude.

The city is not very welcoming to these men in saffron but businesses are flourishing and all hotels are booked. What I liked about them is their unity in small groups, chanting filled with fervor and love overflowing. How I wished I had a camera while traveling so that you could picture what I mean :)

The course was a blast! Lots of enthusiastic guys and girls filled up to empty themselves from the clutches of the past and boulders of the future. It happened. As always.

My daily activities were totally governed by the electricity and I had tuned myself physically, mentally and emotionally to the presence of darkness :) Sab maya hai!!

The last day of the course concluded at a beautiful farmhouse of rohit and though the tennis court was very inviting, I did what I am supposed to do. Teach. And then we cruised for lunch at the Taj Ganges. I loved the pizza and it was raining olive oil. Yummy. The char-grilled vegetables transformed my mind set. The east indies crepe was luscious with extra cheese. The al-dente pasta was showered with extra parmesan cheese got me back to my nature. The lasagna was not worth indulging, overfilled with raw French beans which took away all of its softness. The desserts were shouting blueberry cheese cake and just in time I saw the red mark next to it. How I wish there were no chickens, and no eggs, then all these desirable cakes would have turned vegetarian. So much for a meal. Yes, I involved myself totally and then dragged myself to the station to land in Bhopal. It was sleep, sleep, sleep all the way and it feels great to be back with all of you. So if you are a fervent disciple of Lord Shiva this is the time to visit banares and invoke innocence and love and feel proud about the faith India transmits. Catch it!

Next post for sure on the DSN.

It happened at first sight with her. Her name is India. The beauty of her traditions and her bridal make up with forests, rivers, breath taking landscapes and deserts. It happened here in Aurwan Tand.

Abject Poverty but amazing acceptance. Stoic acceptance of Fate. No roti, kapada or makaan, but a smile decorated their faces. System failure, but solid faith.

May she live long, beautiful, strong just the way she is. Always. My love, My Country. India.

Series 3 of 4

May29

The school started. These three words are so easy to write now, but there were many comma’s, question marks, semi-colons sometimes exclamatory mark s but never a full-stop between these three dreamy words. These days there are classes which teach how to-be a mother, how to tie a diaper etc etc, but my experience in running a school was that of a baby looking at three twin sisters, and deciding which is his real mother. The decisions had to be quick and correct, involving the village, the children, the society and the education system.

The village was riddled with Naxalism and just meters away the government had pumped in money to the tune of 100 crores to fight naxalism, cutting the branches of the problem not uprooting it. The peaceful words of the Guru carry high voltage of truth and the nature attunes itself, bows down to His eternal verities to align itself to His utterances. It happened. I saw it happyning J

With two committed teachers who decided to dedicate years of their life for this school, the school re-commissioned, the children slowly and steadily gained interest in different subjects, including chanting, Sanskrit, and we affiliated it to the National Open Schooling under the ICSE arm. Small girls and boys would wake up early morning and begin their journey, their destination some 4-5 kms away, but the dedication was deep and intense, the faith tremendous.

The day would start with folded hands to convey gratitude to the Lord, progress into the depths of science and floated upwards with spirited enthusiasm of football and volleyball. Within months 64 children were being reborn and induced with doses of maths, geography, science and our great valiant history. They wanted more, and soon there were small Dhoni’s and Bhutia’s giving brief appearances of hitting a four or a penalty corner on the mountain terrains of Aurwan Tand.

The blue school dress provided uniformity amongst the different caste systems prevalent, the prayers injected faith and sanskaar, the studies established the information, attitude, concepts and the love, instilled survival, care and trust. The school with no electricity, no water initially, became the great gesture of returns and seva that the society gifted to Aurwan Tand. They had dreamt. Now it was a reality.

Naxalism evaporated from this village, with many joining the mainstream, the water tap tapped our doorstep minus the water though, the CRPF took regular breaks in the evening over chai and mari biscuits and there has not been a single hunger death in over 4 years. Malnutrition melted away and we have muscular men and women in their early years to success. Set amidst the forests, the innocence of the villagers carry grace and humility. To reach this non-existent village, one has to travel 90 kms from Benares and if you can withdraw your attention from the scenic landscape, you might reach this tiny place.

With every single day, proving to be a challenge to the core yet the pillar of prosperity had been established and the sordid saga of this village and villages adjoining it, was vacuumed off by the great Guru. There are many real characters who made this sentimental series into a funny flicker. Shruti the principal, Ramavatar, Ramlal the teachers, Pavan, Anoop, Ruchi to name a handful. They were determined. They were undeterred. They were patient. Love Prevailed.

With whom, in the next post.

Love at first Sight – Series 2 of 4

May28

The entire government seemed to be suffering from collective laryngitis and a bold initiative was required to get a small town with Kharwar, Musahar and Chero tribes out of their habitual dolor. An abject failure of policies, leadership and projects had dehydrated this tribal land.

The children wanted to be naxalites, with 400 operative naxalites amidst them, whose needs were dictated on the people around the villages. Water was a luxury and the inhabitants existed on onions and rice for life. They wept. They waited. They survived. I sat outside the hut and could not comprehend why thousands of crores of taxpayers money would not reach here. The reason was they were unaware of their rights, unaware of democratic strength and unaware of the power of prayer. The small village with many more around it seriously grieved. It was wounded. It wanted a rescue. It was waiting for a master to save it…

I immediately decided to act and do something amidst the busy traveling that I was scheduled to do for months. I wrote to Guruji asking Him for His guidance and within minutes there was a reply as short and strong as possible. He replied “Start a school there.”. is words were final for me, I knew there will be a new lease of life.

With spirited encouragement and blessings of the master, I decided to take up a dilapidated school in the premises and reopen it with a new name and committed vivacity – Sri Sri Vidya Mandir. A place where education will be worshiped and where worship will be part of an education system.

Integrating an education system amongst the tribal’s is a challenging and humungous task, as no one is educated, neither are they logged on to the world through the internet or the idiot box to compare, to know the laser effect of schooling. The school was quietly started with a Guru Pooja and blessings of Guruji with no funds at hand, neither any students committed to learn.

The impetus that the children had was mid day meals as many suffered from malnutrition. The delicious baked rice with some jaggery and pulses were never eaten by the children at school, however hungry and deserted their stomachs were, they took it home to share it with their parents and juniors, so that they also could breathe, for one more day. Live for today. There were many hunger deaths in that year in the village.

What happened then….did the school run, did children learn, what about child marriages in that village, with whom had love happened…in the next posts.

Love at First Sight - Series 1 of 4

May27

Many moons ago, it was yet another broiling day in Benaras Hindu University and I went to meet a professor to acquaint him about the AOL activities in the campus. The professor completely in agreement with Guruji’s work and His vision told me to accompany him to a tribal village nearby. I acceded to the request immediately, but little did I know that I had signed a bond of love for many many years to come.

We fixed a Sunday evening, now four years ago, placed ourselves into a vintage Mahindra jeep and it sped past the beautiful Kashi Nagari in no time. The Naugarh district pathways are very beautiful with paddy fields on both sides and ancient trees to ogle at. I was deeply mesmerized with the nature heralding herself to me after every rise and fall of the roads.

The terrain quickly changed from plain lands to thick forests, passing by us were armed posts of CRPF. Men in khakhis standing tall with Kalashnikov rifles and the eyes of a hawk. I totally unaware of any facts and figures then, only wondered why would the government spend so much money to have a vigilant CRPF post in the middle of the forest. The journey unrevealed many skirts of happiness in shapes of trees, flowers, villagers eyeing our jeep and small children shouting, playing and frolicking to mother nature.

The path had become thinner but the bushes were getting thicker. The air was fresh but there was something which whispered the rancidity of life. The Jeep stopped at a village called Aurwan Tand in front of a small hut and my mind started its journey to think – Does human life exist here? I was introduced to a very feeble, scrawny woman who was the head of the village. My refreshments included water, rice water and some sliced onions to quench my appetite.

Still oblivious to the purpose of my visit, I goggled the village with my eyes. I was totally unaware of what I was getting into. The village with 100 families wore ornamental look amidst thick trees, mountains and I like an inquisitive bird warbling away, didn’t know that love at first sight had again become a reality in my life!!

With whom, keep reading… :)
