This was a long pending movie to be watched and my ipod had carried it for many months now. A 10 hour flight from Nadi, Fiji to Hongkong and I feel honored now that I decided to see it. Usually melodramatic movies are not my choice, but this turned out to be filled with devotion, sacrifice, love and truth.
Meera, hailing from the princely Rathod Rajput family, had her mind fixed on Lord Krishna right from the days that she remembered. The circa is around the century when Akbar wants to rule over the entire India and the only resistance he found was from the Rajputs. But here the rajputs are divided between the Rathod’s and the Sisodia’s. So the Rathod King decides to give away his daughers hand to the Sisodia family and thus cementing a bigger army alliance. But things take a turn and Meera gets wed to the Sisodia family and her struggle to balance her devotion with her marriage begins.
Hema Malini has justified her role as Meera though at times she looks dull and dry without the flair of devotion. Vinod Khanna was superb as Rana and in the end when he discloses how he relates to Meera, was an acting par excellence. I wish someone remakes this for the modern generation and gets Lata Mangeshkar to sing all those Meera Bhajans. I almost soaked my eyes in the flight watching her sing “Mere toh Giridhar Gopal”, she is totally wet in devotion and love for her lord, I found her to be one of her kind, alone, yet not lonely.
Watch it once for sure after you have meditated.
